This morning I write as ‘Ms Up-In-Arms’ and a valiantly protesting professional hypnotherapist!

Do I need my own therapy you wonder? “Yes absolutely.” We all can benefit from accessing our deepest minds to polish the inner jewels to their brightest and best!  And as I often say to people who are undecided, “I wish I could experience what I offer in my hypnotherapy work, as the results can be so miraculous, moving, and magnificent, and I remind them too that ― of all the people in the whole wide world, I am the only person who cannot book to experience the one-to-one work that I facilitate.

So why do I recommend my own form of hypnotherapy professionalism?  A dear and respected friend and colleague, David Bullock, with whom I have co-facilitated on Power of Oratory offerings, forwarded a Gum Tree Deal of the Day to me yesterday.  “Special offer: £99 to Become a Fully Certified Professional Hypnotherapist”.  He sent this ‘deal’ through quite late in the day, and I wondered as to whether I would sleep?  Well, I do know a very good interactive hypnotherapist …  However, on with the story!

This cheap cut-price correspondence course is teaching a limited form of hypnosis called ‘direct suggestion’ as opposed to the more flexible and more potent participativeform.  The course is a ‘deal’ reduced from £599, and that too is cheap! The blurb reports “Applicants will receive a CD-ROM containing 200 hypnotherapy scripts to help you with your sessions’.
No doubt these scripts will cover 200 ‘issues’ from A to Z.  One can imagine a script to build self-confidence, another for self-esteem, another for fear of spiders, for flying and the whole lexicon of phobic fears, and so on.  Scripts in every colour, every size, perhaps, but not any that truly fit any unique individual!

Here are the words of a client reflecting on his experience of hypnosis by direct suggestion: ʺI sat and listened for twenty minutes to a prepared script.  It didnʹt dent the surface.  Nice words, but they went over the top.  I didnʹt feel them inside me.  I came away, and afterwards felt no difference.ʺ  Contrast that with the same clientʹs experience of interactive hypnotherapy: ʺI feel much more confident about it!  There is nothing pushy about it.  Itʹs a bit of a wonderment.  It gives me so much food for thought and that in itself is good.  The words stay there and you can feed on them.ʺ

Even the revered father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud had initially used hypnotic suggestion as a symptomatic technique: he tried to implant suggestions to make the patientʹs symptoms just go away.  With this, he had limited and generally only temporary success.  Freud and others realised that the reason that direct suggestion ultimately failed was that it did not locate and remove the root cause of the patientʹs problem.  This is often the case: direct suggestion is a ʹbluntʹ instrument.

What it comes down to is this: do you just want to be read to?  Trust me on this!  You may just as well go out and buy a CD and listen to it.  Freud was correct in knowing that the real potency of interactive hypnotherapy is the power and ease in which you can access the ‘source’ of an experience that may be limiting our beliefs about ourselves, and our ability to celebrate ourselves.  Self-celebration employs your words, your phrases, and your song!  It does not rely on the words of one of two hundred scripts that may not reflect your vocabulary in any way whatsoever!

Decades ago ‘Ten bob’ (that is, ten shillings, which today is fifty pence sterling) was enough to get an Englishman to Australia.  These emigrants were known as the ‘Ten bob Poms’.  Now that seemed like a great deal!

Today a cut-price £99 deal makes a cut price unprofessional hypnotherapist.    No other real professional vocation offers training for £599.  Supplementary courses perhaps, but not a qualification that claims to make you qualified.  No. No. No!   When I speak about my work, I tell clients they are buying a “couture, tailor-made garment, designed by them, and co-created employing their vocabulary, and sewn together, as a team!”  Cut the price and you cut the cloth, the skill, the ability, and ultimately you waste your investment.  Remember too, only thirty percent of folks respond to direct suggestion.  This is a low success rate in my professional book.
Do not sell your self cheap.  Find a true hypnotherapy professional, who really has invested in comprehensive and practise-based training, and believes in the best for you.

Speak your words.  Participate!  Interactive Hypnotherapy is the way to go!
